Pavakka Pulincurry / Bitter gourd in tamarind pulp

Its been really long since I posted something in ma blog. Am really busy these days and will be busy till next January end. You 'll see me rarely posting. I'll try to get some guest post for you from ma blog friends...

I am finding very hard to restrain myself from blogging, but the thought that I haven't updated ma space for quite long time made me sad. My Mom was there with me on this Mothers Day and she cooked this for me. I loved it and decided to photograph  and post it for you all.

  1. Bitter gourd : 1 medium
  2. Shallot : 10 nos
  3. Ginger : 1" piece
  4. Garlic : 1 pod
  5. Green chilli : 2 nos
  6. Chilli powder : 1 tsp
  7. Turmeric powder : 1/4 tsp
  8. Fenugreek : 1 large pinch
  9. Mustard : 1 large pinch
  10. Dry red chilli : 1 no.
  11. Curry leaves : 1 sprig
  12. Tamarind : Small lemon sized
  13. Water : 2 cups
  14. Salt : To taste
  15. Sugar : 1 pinch
  16. Oil : To saute

  1. Soak tamarind in 2 cup of luke warm water for 10 minutes
  2. Deseed the bitter gourd and cut into small 1'' pieces.
  3. Rub it with salt and microwave it for 5-6 minutes to reduce the bitterness.
  4. Extract the tamarind pulp and boil the tamarind water.
  5. Add turmeric powder, 1/4 tsp of chilli powder, 1 green chilli (chopped), 1 pinch ginger, 1 pinch garlic, salt and bitter gourd to the boiling tamarind pulp.
  6. Cook till bitter gourd is soft and the water is evaporated.
  7. In a thick bottom pan, splutter mustard, fenugreek and red chilli.
  8. Add shallot, green chillies, chopped ginger and garlic and curry leaves. Saute well till the colour changes to brown.
  9. Add red chilli powder and turmeric powder. Saute for two minutes.
  10. Add the bitter gourd.
  11. Adjust the salt and add a pinch of sugar.

Serve hot with rice !!!
